Risk Factors for Lumbar Intervertebral Disc Height Narrowing -Ten Years Retrospective Cohort Study

ثبت نشده
چکیده

INTRODUCTION: The intervertebral disc (IVD) is fibro-cartilaginous structures, composed of two major regions; the outer ring, called annulus fibrosus and the inner part, called the nucleus pulposus. These different tissues including cellular components maintain the metabolism of IVD and play an important role in mechanical function of spine. IVD is well known to degenerate by age, however the cause and pathophygiology of IVD degeneration has not been completely elucidated. Clinically, disc-space narrowing is the most commonly used specific finding to indicate IVD degeneration. It is generally believed that the progression of disc degeneration is associated with low back pain and with the progression of degenerative lumbar diseases. However, few data exist concerning the natural history of lumbar disc degeneration and its associated risk factors. To date, there are only a few reports of longitudinal studies on the progression of lumbar disc degeneration [1-3]. In addition, no cohort study has been reported in which lumbar disc height was quantitatively evaluated. The purpose of this study was (1) to quantitatively evaluate the change in lumbar disc height by radiographic measurement during ten years in a population-based cohort study and (2) to investigate risk factors for the development of disc height narrowing.

Risk factors for lumbar intervertebral disc height narrowing: a population-based longitudinal study in the elderly

BACKGROUND The progression of disc degeneration is generally believed to be associated with low back pain and/or degenerative lumbar diseases, especially in the elderly. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate changes in lumbar disc height using radiographic measurements and to investigate risk factors for development of disc height narrowing of the elderly. METHODS From 1997...

Comparison the Recurrence Rate of Intervertebral Disc Herniation in Two Surgical Methods of Hemi laminectomy and Partial Laminectomy

Background & Aims: Between 5% and 15% of patients with low back pain suffer from lumbar disc herniation, so intervertebral disc disease is one of the most common causes of low back pain. Surgical intervention for lumbar disc herniation is recommended in patients with severe symptoms and has hopeful results. Although surgery can reduce pain and improve physical function in the short term, its lo...

Minimum 10-Year Follow-up Study of Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion for Degenerative Spondylolisthesis: Progressive Pattern of the Adjacent Disc Degeneration

STUDY DESIGN Retrospective study. PURPOSE The aims of the current study are to evaluate the minimum 10-year follow-up clinical results of anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) for degenerative spondylolisthesis. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE ALIF has been widely used as a treatment regimen in the management of lumbar spondylolisthesis. Still much controversy exists regarding the factors that aff...

Measuring Dimensions of Lumbar Intervertebral Discs in Normal Subjects

Introduction: Disc degeneration is a natural aging process characterized by changes in appearance and chemical structure of the disc. This degeneration leads to back pain. In regard to the limitation of current therapeutical methods for patients with degenerated discs, arthroplasty has been suggested as an alternative method. To manufacture artificial discs for Iranians, determining normal lumb...

Kineflex (Centurion) Lumbar Disc Prosthesis: Insertion Technique and 2-Year Clinical Results in 100 Patients

BACKGROUND The Kineflex lumbar disc is a mechanical, unconstrained, re-centering disc prosthesis developed in South Africa. The first implantation took place in October 2002. We present a single-center, prospective, longitudinal study of the first 100 patients treated with the Kineflex lumbar disc. Our objective was to evaluate the insertion technique, clinical outcomes, and patient satisfactio...
